We did not vote blindly: women

Women’s organisations have dismissed the assertion that women voted blindly in the constitutional referendum and have attributed the adoption of the new draft constitution to advocacy work.

Zimbabwe Women’s Bureau, an affiliate organisation of the Grassroots Women’s Network comprising of three organisations namely Self Help Development Foundation, Jekesa Pfungwa/Vulingqondo and Young Women Christian Association, said it was not true that most women voted based on the dictates of their political parties. ZWB Director, Ronica Mumbire, said: “Women’s organisations have influenced the adoption of the constitution and considering that they are apolitical, it is baseless to attribute the ‘yes’ vote to political parties alone.”

She said women’s organisations, “have been focused in their quest to ensure that the draft sails through”.

Mumbire said: “It is not true that women voted blindly for the new constitution because “at the grassroots levels, where the organisation is most active, we worked hard to ensure that women were aware of the contents”.

Self-Help Development Foundation Director, Wadzanai Vere, concurred with Mumbire and said women, especially from a grassroots level, had the opportunity to discuss the contents of the new draft constitution.

“Women’s organisations should be commended for their immense contribution in making sure that citizens are aware of the contents of the new draft because they educated women on why they should vote ‘yes’ using simplified fliers in local languages.”
