Madiro case exposes ZRP

The failure by the Zimbabwe Republic Police to investigate five Zanu (PF) Manicaland provincial executive members who were accused of fraud exposes their double standards as they arbitrarily arrest MDC-T officials and members, says the MDC.

The police have been reluctant to give a progress report on the case involving five executive members, provincial chairperson Mike Madiro, provincial youth chairperson, Tawanda Mukodza, youth secretary for security Admire Mahachi, youth secretary for information and publicity, Masimba Kangai and former District Coordinating Committee chairperson for Mutare Urban, Clever Muparutsa.

In January, this year, Zanu (PF)’s Presidium ordered police to take over investigations of the five senior party officials who are facing allegations of fraud and corruption involving more than $700 000 they allegedly collected from diamond mining companies.

However, three months down the line, the Criminal Investigations Department has not filed any report.

The Zimbabwean has it on good authority that no arrests, detentions or even questioning have been done, thereby rebuking the order from President Robert Mugabe to dig up the matter.

So far eight Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s staffers have been picked up over the past fortnight on trumped up charges of impersonating the police.

The first four: former Harare City councillor, Warship Dumba, Thabani Mpofu, Felix Matsinde, Mehluli Tshuma and Anna Muzvidziwa, were charged with impersonating police and remanded on $500 bail each.

The other two: Spiwe Vera and Elizabeth Banda, who are both caretakers at the Premier’s office, were questioned and released after brief interrogation.

This follows the widely condemned arrest of Human Rights Lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa.

MDC-T stalwarts have come out guns blazing accusing the Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri-led law enforcement agency of selective application of the law.

MDC-T secretary general Tendai Biti told party members in Mutare that the police should be “ashamed” of themselves before accusing them of partisanship.

“The country’s police should be ashamed of themselves. Our innocent party members and officials have been subject to unlawful arrests while corrupt Zanu (PF) officials are walking scot-free,” said Biti.

MDC- T deputy national chairman, Morgan Kimichi, said unlike Zanu (PF), which is full of fraudulent and corrupt officials, he is disturbed that his party members continue to be unlawfully persecuted.

“We know diamonds are being looted in Chiadzwa by Zanu (PF) officials but surprisingly they are not being arrested,” said Komichi.
