Taekwondo champs a blessing: Mathazia

Local fighters are expected to benefit from the forthcoming Africa Taekwondo Championships. “Participating in an international event will be a blessing to our fighters,” said Zimbabwe Taekwondo Association public relations and events director, Eyahra Mathazia.

“We expect participants from 20 countries, some coming from as far as Asia and Europe. We hope this will improve the standard of our local fighters.”

Mathazia said the event would provide a chance for local amateurs to witness how the sport is played at the highest level. “We also hope children will be inspired to action by some world-class players. We will be very happy for schools to their send trainers for some courses that will help them. This is an event to make the sport in the country better.”

The championships are set for May 30 to June 3 at Emerald Hill School for the Deaf. Zimbabwe’s martial arts team did well at the last regional championships in South Africa, where they won several medals. Last year, they took part in several Taekwondo tournaments in the region and won various accolades.
