Intwasa hopes to create new markets

Organisers of the Intwasa Arts Festival, a premier arts gathering, say the newly-forged partnership with South Africa’s Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Development Corporation will help create new markets for southern African art products and strengthen regional integration and corporation.

Through their Art Fund, Pro Helvetia and SDC will be supporting a number of regional theatre productions during the festival scheduled for Bulawayo in September.

“We are excited about the new partnership and the resultant regional integration and linkages the partnership seeks to promote. It is our hope that this is the beginning of a long relationship between Pro Helvetia, SDC and Intwasa,” Raisedon Baya, Intwasa Arts Festival Programme Director, told The Zimbabwean from Bulawayo.

The partnership will see the new partners support such plays as the acclaimed one man show, Itsoseng, written by by Omphile Molusi and Botswana’s Ghetto.

It is a story about a township that was burned to ashes and is still hoping to rise again.

Another play, the Stronger Woman, which explores trials and triumphs of women, is also from Botswana.

SDC and Pro Helvetia support local capacity building and encourage cultural interaction between Southern African countries. The activities granted support are regional cross-border projects initiated by arts organisations, with a focus on either advocacy or mentoring.
