Silobela police ban MDC-T Independence celebrations

Police in Silobela constituency in Midlands province today banned Independence celebration event organised by MDC-T saying Zanu PF was holding similar celebrations just a few kilometres away from the venue.

The MDC-T had organised an Independence celebrations part at BB shopping centre under Chief Malisa in Silobela and was supposed to be addressed by deputy organizing secretary Abedinico Bhebhe.

“Police have blocked our independence celebrations here at BB shopping centre this morning saying Zanu PF is the only party which should be allowed to hold independence celebrations. We had organised a big event but police officers from Silobela police station have suddenly stopped it,”MDC-T Silobela district executive member Fanuel Sibindi told The Zimbabwean.

Bhebhe also said the banning of independence celebrations by police is shocking “It was just an independence celebration where everybody was being invited but police banned it.”

Zimbabwe is celebrating its 33 years from Independence from Britain today and in the past years Zanu PF has been monopolising the independence celebrations around the country However in his Independence day message yesterday MDC-T leader and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said the good news is that this year, “our independence day is coming after we have overwhelmingly voted for a new Constitution-a new charter that will go a long way in addressing the absence of basic freedoms and the deficit of good governance we have endured over the past three decades".

Tsvangirai said with pride that Zimbabweans celebrate this year’s Independence anniversary because as a people, we have collectively set new ground rules and a new value system under which we want to be governed.

The Prime Minister said the forthcoming election, have an ample opportunity to further our independence agenda by voting for new ideas that promote democracy and allow us to pursue and live our dreams.
