Prior to the Independence Trophy, Dynamos had not won a domestic game this season, the first of their four Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches all ending in a draw.
But a solitary goal from captain Murape Murape gave Dembare the trophy against a Highlanders side who on their part have won three of their four first games of the season.
The win, takes Dynamos’ Independence Trophy titles to seven while Highlanders have two. Dynamos’ neighbours Caps United have three Independence Trophy championships while Black Rhinos have one after beating fellow servicemen Chapungu, a few years ago.
The win is also a relief to Dynamos coach Kalisto Pasuwa who had been given two games to win against Highlanders in both games the two teams have been fixtured during this period.
Apart from the Independence Trophy, Dynamos and Highlanders are also scheduled to meet in a league match at Rufaro Stadium over the weekend.
Highlanders’ Njabulo Ncube was given his marching orders for head butting Augustine Mbara, and has been ruled out of t league match.
Highlanders had the best chance to equalise six minutes before the end but Beavan Chikaka shot way off the target with the goalkeeper Artwell Mukandi beaten and an open goal before him.
It was also a day in which Ugandan Borban Ziruntusa showed his class by not playing to the gallery but playing to the basics of give and pass instead of trying to dribble his way past opponents and in the process lose possession.
This is also the second time in cup matches that Dynamos have beaten Highlanders after beating Bosso in the Bob 89 Super Cup which Dynamos won 6-1 on aggregate.
Chicken Inn came third in the Independence Trophy after beating Monomotapa 3-1 at Barbourfields Stadium. This comes after the team also won the NetOne Charity Shield after overcoming Caps United 3-2, proving that they will be a strong contender for the league title this year.
