Ncube’s MDC lures disgruntled voters

As intra-party fighting continues within the MDC-T in Mashonaland East Province, the MDC led by Welshman Ncube has reportedly embarked on a campaign to lure disgruntled and suspended members, in a move that could result in more defections from the MDC-T.

According to a well-placed source within the MDC-T in the province, the party has deployed two of its members, Amos Reza and one only identified as Chidodo, to drum up support among MDC-T activists.

Recently Reza, a former MDC-T councillor, and Ward 6 councillor Chenjerai Chako from Chikomba West joined Ncube’s party in protest at what they claim are Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s “dictatorial tendencies” and “loss of direction”.

Reza and Chako are reported to have met Ncube and senior party members in Chivhu before pledging their new allegiance. The source revealed that the duo has moved to Marondera, where they are targeting ‘powerful MDC-T members’ in the province including the Mayor, Farai Nyandoro, who they met last week.

“Nyandoro met the duo at a restaurant in Ruwa where he was asked to join MDC. They promised him and all those who defect heaven on earth. They even told him that they were on a mission to persuade all the suspended and disgruntled MDC-T activists to defect,” said the source.

When contacted for comment, Nyandoro, could neither confirm nor deny meeting the two. “I have the freedom to meet whoever I want anytime however I am not at liberty to comment on the issue and I am the only person who knows best about my political life,” he said.

MDC deputy spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi confirmed his party was on a mission to lure former MDC-T activists in Mashonaland East. “It is an on-going exercise. We are working day and night to strengthen our party structures and we can achieve this through demolishing those belonging to MDC-T. We have all the ammunition and apparatus needed for these crusades so that we deliver and conquer the whole province,” he said. Last week over 200 MDC-T supporters defected to Ncube’s party in Bulawayo.
