This approach of reaching the electorate is perfectly legal in Zimbabwe and is being done by all parties in this pre-election period, as it has been done in the past.
I see this as part of intimidatory tactics being employed by the security sector, in this case, the ZRP, in support of ZANU-PF. As they took away Mai Maponde and Mai Mukarati to Helensvale Police station, they left the ZANU-PF team on the carrying out its D2D in peace, creating a sense of fear in our supporters, and a sense of superiority in the other camp.
I gather the Police are not pleased by the fact that my team are wearing MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS T/SHIRTS. These are given to Cde Mohadi and I to distribute as we do wish. Those people wearing them are fully and unconditionally entitled to wearing them. The problem is that some people in the security sector believe that some people are more equal than others.
It is this very kind of behavior which is causing all democratic forces locally, regionally and internationally to insist on security sector reform. The ZRP can apply the law evenly if they are not forced to behave unprofessionally. We cannot proceed to a free and fair election unless we have security sector reform as a bearest minimum condition in line with the SADC GUIDELINES FOR ELECTIONS.
