Basic freedoms

EDITOR - President Mugabe’s speech that there are no basic freedoms after 33 years of independence is too little too late. Has it only just dawned to him that suppressing other political players is reversing the gains of independence?

If you think of 33 years of independence you can’t imagine people being denied the right to freely represent their party in any election or even to put on their party regalia.

Mugabe must tell his comrades that they are reversing the gains of the liberation struggle in their day-to-day meetings, and then we can take him seriously.

He must understand that his children will soon claim their basic freedoms, not from the ruling party but from the opposition. The war veterans have played their part in the struggle so let them enjoy seeing us exercising what they fought for, total independence.

How can we say we are independent when more people have gone into exile in the past decade than during the apartheid era? When we have more political prisoners than during the apartheid era? When we have fewer basic freedoms than during the apartheid era? When even the traditional leaders are slaves and savants of the people and the party they supported during wartime? We want freedom. – Lovemore Chikandiwa, Pretoria
