We are the spine: Sweswe

Former national team defender, Thomas Sweswe, recently credited his combination with countryman, Tinashe Nengamasha, for the good run by ABSA Premiership side, Bidvest Wits.

The Clever Boys are having one of their best games in years this season, under 1996 Afcon-winning coach, Clive Barker. Sweswe recently told The Zimbabwean this could be partly because of the experience he and defensive midfielder, Nengomasha, brought into the side they joined from Kaizer Chiefs at the beginning of this season.

“Being in the same team with Nengomasha has been a great privilege that helped me settle easily even during our days at Chiefs,” said the former Highlanders and Dynamos player.

“We have played together at both Chiefs and the national team before and I have always had great respect for him. He has taught me quite a lot. He is quite a good leader and mentor. Whenever we are on the pitch, we motivate and try to push each other because we are the spine of the team. I am one of the defence pillars, but would not have done so well without the assistance he has provided ahead of the defence.”

Sweswe, whose side are fourth on the 16-team log, also said the Wits team was made up of dedicated players and mixed both junior vibrancy with experience to improve on its traditional norm of fighting relegation every season.

“We want to keep that winning mentality and maintain our league position so that we finish in the Top8 and that seems highly possible with three games to go now.”
