Youth get summit invite

Two Zimbabwean young people have been invited to participate in the One Young World Summit, which takes place in the United States next week.

One Young World Africa director, Catherine Peter, told The Zimbabwean Bridget Mutsonziwa and Justin Hess would join other youth from October 18 to 22 to discus prevailing issues and offer solutions that affect young people around the world.

Started in 2009 by One World, a London-based charity, the summit brings together inspirational youth who have a positive impact in their local communities.

Mutsonziwa is part of network of young volunteers who initiate environmental projects that engage young people in and out of school. She was recently selected to be the first young people’s representative within the National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe due to her leadership qualities and advocacy as well passion for young people to take the lead. She is also a volunteer and the secretary with the National Young People’s Network on HIV and AIDS that falls under the NACZ.

At the Zimbabwe Youth Council, were she is the Sexual and Reproductive Health Officer, she trains youth organisations on the importance of mainstreaming HIV and AIDS, Sexual and Reproductive Health issues within their work plans.

Hess has, over the last six years, helped run a charity called “Zimbabwe Rural Schools Development Programme” that is building new schools in the most rural parts of Zimbabwe. He helped increase the charity’s annual income from £4 000 to £ 55 000.

The most recent school to benefit is Makowe Primary, which was completed last year.

Peter paid tribute to One Young World ambassadors from Zimbabwe.

“An array of Zimbabwean ambassadors from past summits is doing incredible community impact work,” she told The Zimbabwean in Johannesburg.
