ZCTU President, George Nkiwane, told The Zimbabwean that elections without reforms would result in bloodshed. “Workers cannot enter into an election they perceive will not be free and fair. We want an election that will be free from any form of violence. We are also saying laws like AIPPA, POSA should be amended before we go for elections.
“Also, if you look at the election roadmap, we are not sure how we are going to conduct the elections and we are also not sure whether we are going to conform to the SADC guidelines on free and fair polls,” said Nkiwane.
“We want a situation where people can express confidence that there is nothing that will lead to these elections being contested. We do not want to see a situation where workers are killed or injured in an effort to choose their leadership. The bottom line is that workers will not enter into an election that will result in deaths,” he added.
The ZCTU and other civil society organisations were supposed to have a meeting with American human rights campaigner Jesse Jackson last week. But it was cancelled after Zanu (PF) said it was not part of the programme submitted by the US embassy in Harare.
