Theatre group supports culture centre

Arts ensemble, African Heritage Theatre Group, has mooted the establishment of a culture centre to tap into and nurture talent in the city.

Theatre Group Director, Samson Chitovhoro, said the centre would help identify hidden talent in Mashonaland East. Chitovhoro said they had appealed to the Municipality of Marondera for a stand where they could construct the centre.

“We are still engaging the Municipality of Marondera and it is my hope that we will be allocated the stand. It is our view that Mashonaland East is full of talented artists who, unfortunately, lack exposure,” said Chitovhoro.

The African Heritage Theatre Group was formed in 1990 and has worked with various non-profit organisations, chief among them the United Nations Children’s Fund. However, the group director bemoaned lack of funding as their greatest challenge.

“The Culture Fund is shunning us. We have applied for financial assistance on numerous occasions but they have turned us down. If we get the much-needed financial injection we would certainly become a vibrant source of arts in the city,” he said.
