Police spokesperson, Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident and said Zanu (PF)’s provincial committee member Maxwell Madarani died on the spot.
Another Zanu (PF) member in the party’s youth wing whose name was not immediately available sustained serious injuries and is detained at Kwekwe General Hospital.
Madarani became popular in his party in the 1980s and was drafted into the Kwekwe branch’s youth council as its leader in 1988.
In 1998, he was promoted into the Midlands provincial executive and subsequently the Provincial Coordinating Committee. He was a member of the party’s PCC at the time of his death.
Governor Jaison Machaya who is also the Zanu (PF) Midlands Provincial Chairman, said he had received the news of Madarani’s death with shock and described him as a “true revolutionary.”
It is the second time that the party has been robbed of a provincial executive member through a road accident in a space of less than six months.
Early this year Jabulani Mangena, who was the Mberengwa North legislator and an ally of Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa due to his state intelligence operative background, also died at West End clinic in Harare after sustaining injuries in a road accident.
