Food strategy on the cards: Mombeshora

The Ministry of Health is currently developing a National Nutrition Strategy to complement the recently launched National Food and Nutrition Security Policy.

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Douglas Mombeshora officially launched the Food and Nutrition Security Policy in Harare recently.

He said implementation of the strategy would require the participation and involvement of stakeholders at all levels of society from community to national level.

“Improved nutrition will contribute to six of the millennium development goals, including the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, reduction of child mortality and improved maternal health,” Mombeshora said.

“Malnutrition is one of the most serious health problems affecting infants, children and women of reproductive age in the country as millions of children and women continue to suffer from one or more forms of under-nutrition including low birth weight, stunting, anaemia, underweight, wasting, vitamin A deficiency and iodine deficiency disorders,” he added.
