Speaking at Bumhudzo Old People’s Home in St Marys, Chitungwiza today, where she donated food worth over $7, 000, Tsvangirai said it is the duty of society to ensure that they cater for the welfare of old people in Zimbabwe.
She said: “Senior citizens deserve a decent life, with good health and good living.
“Old people are the fountains of wisdom and they are a valuable resource to families and communities.”
Tsvangirai said because senior citizens had made significant contributions towards the development of their communities in the country, it was the duty of society to accord them the luxury they deserved.
“Old people are the backbone of society, especially on matters of culture, marriage and other related family issues. They are consulted because of their vast knowledge and experience on how to resolve such challenges,” she said.
The donation, consisting of 900kgs of mealie- meal, 200kgs of rice, 180 litres of cooking oil, 8 cartons of washing soap, 300kgs of sugar and flour among others, was handed over to the Salvation Army Church run home for the elderly.
Major Angeline Kapere, one of the administrators at Bumhudzo Old People’s home commended the initiative and thanked the Chitungwiza community for supporting the home.
“We accept any assistance in any form and we would like to thank everyone who is making the lives of the elderly people at this centre and in the country pleasant by donating all sorts of goods and services,” said Kapere.
However, Kapere refused to disclose whether the centre receives any assistance from the Social Welfare and said: “I cannot answer that.”
Bumhudzo Old People’s Home, was built in 1974 and it caters for a maximum of 110 people from all over Zimbabwe. Anyone above the age of 60 years is eligible to stay at the centre, but applications are processed via the Social Welfare offices, under the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.
