Ndlovu was shot on the head in the slummy suburb of Diepsloot on Sunday night, while he and fellow members of rhumba outfit Mlambos Express Band were dancing outside some shops.
An Asian businessman arrested by police on the same night, later claimed that the musician was robbing his shop, but this was quashed by eye-witnesses. Police and members of the army were called in as the riots went on into Monday afternoon, with the public making vows to chase away all Indian shop owners.
Local radio station, Ukhozi FM, which broadcasts in Zulu, tried to shift the blame to claim that the Zimbabweans were committing robbery. “That radio station was not even at the scene and none of its staff ever interviewed anyone. I was there when the shooting happened and Suppah was selling CDs to onlookers while his other band members were dancing,” said Kwaito musician, Promise “DJ Mapressa” Sibanda, who was at the scene.
“We will fight to see that justice prevails because we all know that the businessman shot Suppah because he accused us of making noise. The truth will come out eventually.” Police said they were still investigating and the businessman would be charged with murder, for which a docket had been opened at the time of going to print.
