Violence erupts over housing scheme

Political violence erupted in Masvingo Urban over the weekend when Zanu (PF) and MDC-T supporters clashed in Mucheke F high density suburb over who should occupy some of the houses in the area.

Tempers flared after a group of Zanu (PF) supporters vowed to evict all MDC -T supporters staying in the houses built under the initiation of former party provincial spokesman Rtd Major Kudzai Mbudzi.

MDC-T supporters teamed up and vowed to resist eviction, arguing that they were paying rent and had lease agreements to the properties.

A stone throwing battle ensued. The police moved in swiftly and arrested two people in connection with the disturbances. “We arrested two people following skirmishes in Mucheke F between Zanu

(PF) and MDC-T supporters and they are still assisting police with investigations”, police provincial spokesman Peter Zhanero told The Zimbabwean.

Zanu (PF) supporter Silas Mutuva said it was unfair for MDC-T supporters to stay in the houses at the same time as campaigning against his party.

“They should just build their own houses because our party members cannot do so for our enemies,” said Mutuva. “We are saying if they want to stay in those houses then they should support our party which made it possible for them to have accommodation.”

Mbudzi later crossed the floor to join Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn. After a stint there he joined Zapu led by former Zipra intelligence supremo Dumiso Dabengwa, where he was at one time tipped to be the party ‘s deputy president.
