Some recruits told The Zimbabwean that authorities at the depot were deducting $3 from their salaries every month to buy the newspaper.
“We do not have choice except to buy the paper because it is widely used as reference during our national service studies,” said a recruit, who declined to be named for fear of victimization.
“Newspapers like the Daily News, The Zimbabwean and Newsday are not allowed in the depot. If a recruit is seen reading or even holding these papers, she or he is in serious trouble,” said another recruit.
The recruits said they spend most of the national service sessions being drilled about the “evil of the MDC and their western backers.” “The whole course is about MDC –T. The instructors spend most of the time denouncing the party and its leadership while glorifying Zanu (PF) leaders,” he added.
The recruits also complained that they were forced to use their own money to buy cleaning materials and sweeping brooms for the depot.
