Why the rat race to State House?

EDITOR - Was left in stitches after going through your article The clowns in our election circus (The Zimbabwean Thur May 30, 2013). What a brilliant piece of satire! But, a certain critical thought sprang to my mind. Why the rat race to State house? To me, the issue you raised is a symptom unto sickness. To me, it’s not about Hosea ‘Kwachu kwachu’.

Chipanga or a nonentity called Egypt Dzine-Munhezva, “crawling out of his hole in Hwedza” to vie for the highest office; but the real issue, is why? What prompts and motivates, clueless ‘persona non gratas’ to engage in such a circus?

As a matter of fact, the reason why we have mushrooming of presidential candidates, some without a clue on how to write a mere party manifesto, is because political posts in our country, have been used as and are still, vehicles to amassing wealth, not serving people or national interests, hence the rate race.

They are like automatic switches, that open floodgates to wealth, thus at the end of the day, we have too many vultures for the carcass. The truth of the matter is, post independent Zimbabwe has seen politicians and those politically connected, especially to Zanu (PF), become filthy rich overnight (from rags to riches) because the decadent system allows them to engage in what Mandarian terms, “Plunder Capitalism” accumulation of wealth through plunder not production, hence the jostling by every Tom, Dick and Harry to try and find their way to State House.

Even Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai pointed out that some of his lieutenants who, upon election were walking on sandals, had amassed inexplicable substantial wealth, within a very short space of time in office. The corrupt and moribund Zanu (PF) system has suffocated everyone, even the man of cloth, hence the rate race for the top post.

Moreover, the top most position in our land has been bastardised by one octogenarian, whose relevance at state house, has become long overdue. I mean, where does a mere Zakio, tending goats, at the back of beyond, get the guts to gun for such an enormous task, like the presidential post?

As a matter of fact, the post is akin to our traditional Chieftainship post, which was both sacred and sacrosanct. But because it has been bastardised, every Jack and Jill thinks of ascendancy. Even clowns, without clout, now think they are worth to grace the corridors of the highest office in the land.

What these people, regardless of their questionable credentials; are simply saying, is that we have better ideas or we can do it better than the one at the helm. Whether they have substance between their ears, to execute the mandate, is subject to debate, but the real issue is, what does it mean to one who occupies the highest office to be challenged by every Jack and Jill; Tom and Dick! Isn’t it high time for someone to check himself before he wrecks himself? And as a nation, what type of political culture are we creating by allowing clown circuses to dominate our political discourse. A vibrant democracy? – Tich, by email
