Future of 3000 families uncertain

The fate of at least 3,000 families in Chivi south remains uncertain after the government failed to secure enough funding to relocate them to pave way for the construction of the Tokwe Mukosi dam.

The MP for the area, Irwin Dzingirayi, has appealed for assistance for those at risk of flooding if they are not relocated. “We have to move with speed to ensure that we get funds for these people to be relocated to areas where there are facilities such as clinics and school,” said Dzingirayi Masvingo provincial administrator Felix Chikovo said the government had failed to get money for the relocation of the families and for building clinics and schools.

“We have firstly run out of land and in addition we have failed to secure funding for these people hence their fate is uncertain,” said Chikovo. Some of the affected people had been resisting eviction, arguing that they want to be moved to areas where there are roads and other facilities such as clinics and schools. Others resisted eviction arguing that they cannot leave the graves of their ancestors.

The completion of the giant dam is now indefinite after companies subcontracted to do the job indicated that they would need additional payment from the state because they had under-quoted for the job.
