Rural ‘cop’ bans Studio 7

A Zanu (PF) activist and member of the neighbourhood watch committee based in Mushangashe resettlement area in Masvingo North is allegedly moving around in Zimbabwe Republic Police uniform threatening villagers who listen to Voice of America’s Studio 7.

“George Muzenda moves around at night monitoring all the villagers who tune in to studio 7. We understand he has a list of the villagers here who listen to Studio 7.We do not know where this guy is getting authority because he is also banning MDC meetings in the area,” said a villager who refused to be named for fear of victimisation.

The villagers also accused Muzenda of arresting parents who fail to pay school fees for their children in time at Matowa primary school.

“I do not know if it is now government policy that parents are supposed to be arrested for failing to raise school fees in time. Muzenda is arresting parents who fail to raise school fees in time for their children. We do not know if he is now a messenger of court for the school,” said another villager.

The villagers said they were also worried about the high rate at which police uniforms were being distributed in the area.

“Nearly everyone, including herd boys and village women, have been incorporated into the neighbourhood watch committee and now wear police uniforms. We suspect this programme is meant to intimidate the villagers as we go towards elections” said another villager, who also declined to be named.

When reached for comment Muzenda confirmed that he was member of the neighbourhood watch but denied harassing villagers.

“I know these things are being said by MDC people. Contrary to what you are saying, it is in fact MDC people who are threatening me,” said Muzenda, adding that no party should hold a meeting in the area without first of all seeking police clearance.

“Whenever a political party, be it Zanu (PF) or MDC, wants to hold their meetings in this area, they must produce a clearance letter. If they fail to do that, the meeting will not be sanctioned,” he said.
