Kapini: Engen Ambassador

Zimbabwean international goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini recently pledged his commitment to assisting youths from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their dreams of making a career out of football.

The popular Zimbabwean player recently held a junior tournament through his Foundation that coincided with his appointment as ambassador of the Engen Under-17 tournament, one of South Africa’s most prominent junior football events.

The 16-team tournament, sponsored by the giant fuel company, will be held between June 21 and 23 in Durban.

“I am honoured at the appointment. Through my ambassadorship, I will help unearth players and enhance their chances of playing professional football,” said Kapini.

The former Highlanders goal-minder is already involved in similar initiatives through the foundation he started in May last year. Last weekend, a select side from Durban won a tournament held in Ndwendwe, one of the most remote areas in the city.

About 20 teams took part in the tournament that senior officials from the South African Football Association, Provincial Sports and Recreation and the local Municipality, attended.

“Through such projects, the Foundation gives disadvantaged youngsters a platform to showcase their talent. We have a responsibility to ensure they get an opportunity to make a career out of the game. There is a lot of talent out there, but it goes untapped because of a lack of opportunities in the remote areas. The tournament was a success with Amazulu identifying three players it will sign for its Under-17 side,” said the Amazulu skipper.
