A group of six police officers pounced on the worshipers at around 9 pm and arrested Sibanda whom they accused of holding a public meeting without police clearance.
“We had just finished our routine Thursday evening prayers when the police officers arrived. They told me that I was under arrest for violating the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) and they took me to Hillside police station where I was detained for more than two hours before my lawyers intervened,” said Sibanda. Sibanda was released around 10 pm after the intervention of her lawyer.
Sibanda’s arrest comes in the wake of the Wednesday arrest of two MDC-T officials for allegedly holding an illegal campaign meeting in Jambezi, Hwange, and Matabeleland North province.
The two Thembinkosi Sibindi and Bethule Nyathi, the party’s Matabeleland North provincial organizing secretary spent the night at Victoria Falls cells following the arrest.
