ZACRO helps prisoners survive the winter

The Zimbabwe Association for Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation of the Offender has provided prison inmates with groceries to see them through the winter months, says the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer, Edison Chihota.

Among the donated goods are Vaseline, sugar, bathing and washing soap. Major beneficiaries of the soap were female inmates serving jail time with their children. Zimbabwe prisons have a total 1,500 female inmates and over 30 children serving time with their mothers. Chihota told The Zimbabwean that this year ZACRO failed to donate as much as it used to do due to a shrinking donor base.

“What we donate to inmates will have been sourced from communities, but this time around economic constraints have forced people to be less generous,” said Chihota.

ZACRO is a not-for-profit social welfare organisation, that caters for prisoners and ex-offenders.
