Illegal voter reg exposed

The MDC-T Midlands South has engaged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission over an illegal voter registration centre that has been operational after the July 10 official end of the exercise.

It is believed that the exercise is meant to facilitate rigging by Zanu (PF) ahead of the next elections set for July 31.

Lilian Acropol, the MDC-T Midlands South Chairperson said when the party officials arrived at the center in Zvegona village over the weekend, authorities manning the place were arrogant and emphasised that they were not operating under ZEC but were instead taking orders directly from Tobaiwa Mudede, the Registra General.

Some of the people who were being registered are understood to have been bussed from outside the district.

“We have taken the matter to ZEC and also we are in possession of images which we took of the center so that they can act as evidence. When we approached ZEC, they however indicated that they are unaware of the center but promised to look into the matter after-which we should be getting feedback,” said Acropol.

The matter come at a time when Innocent Benza, the Mutasa Central Zanu (PF) candidate who runs Herentals Colleges which has branches in Kwekwe and Gweru, was caught in a storm last week after he bussed his employees to go and register as voters in his constituency pretending to be from Manicaland.

According to the amended registration requirements demanded by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, a prospective voter can complete an affidavit form claiming to be a resident of a particular area, if they do not have other documents that could be used as sources for prove of residence. It is therefore that technicality which was used by Benza to beat the electoral process and register his employees from kwekwe and Gweru in Mutasa Central in order to influence his victory at the next polls.
