Tsvangirai promises Shurugwi better utilisation of resources

MDC presidential candidate Morgan Tsvangirai has promised the people of Shurugwi that he will use the country’s natural resources to fight poverty.

Shurugwi is a mineral rich area and one of the biggest mines in the country Unki, is located in the area.

Tsvangirai told scores of his supporters at a campaign rally at Tongogara growth point last week that it was unfortunate that many of the country’s citizens were living in poverty in a country with abundant resources.

“Our country is very rich but we have got poor people. The MDC’s first duty once in office is to create jobs by reopening companies that were shut down, reopen mines and undertake massive infrastructure rehabilitation,” Tsvangirai said.

Tsvangirai attacked the lack of transparency in the diamond sector. He said the remission of diamond revenue to the government had been paltry.

Some of the people who came to the rally told the MDC leader that they wanted him to “take action” on the soft treatment of the Chinese.

Tsvangirai told the people that he wanted to restore the dignity of Zimbabweans.

“Look at all your children who are here. Some went as far as ‘A’ level at school, others ‘O’ level but there is no difference between them and Standard Six or Sub A,” he said.

He urged the people to participate in the polls saying the difference between the status quo and their future was in their vote.

Tsvangirai said Zimbabweans did not need a 90 year old leader.

“Have we run out of manpower in this country that we give a 90 year old man another five years in office? The whole world would ridicule us,” he said.

Tsvangirai said the living conditions of the country’s policemen and soldiers were deplorable and needed urgent attention.

“Policemen are living with their families in accommodation partitioned only by curtains. Then you hear someone forcing them to vote for his party when it is that party that is responsible for those living conditions,” he said.

He urged the people to hold their elected representatives accountable. From Tongogara Tsvangirai went on to address another rally Mukandapi Business Centre in the same area.
