SADC urges smooth election

The Extraordinary Summit of the Southern Africa Development Community Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation has urged all parties participating in the general election to co-operate with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to ensure credible polls at the end of the month.

The troika, which met in Pretoria, South Africa on Saturday, said Zimbabwe must ensure that there is no chaos as was the case in last week’s special vote when more than 40,000 uniformed forces, ZEC staff and civil servants failed to vote due to the unavailability of ballots.

The failure cast doubt on ZEC’s preparedness for the July 31 general election.

“The Summit noted the problems that arose during the special vote on July 14-15 2013 and would like to commend ZEC for taking these up as challenges to be overcome on the 31st of July, and called upon all political parties to cooperate as fully as possible with ZEC in order to ensure that it is able to meet these challenges,” the communiqué read.

The Summit commended the Zimbabwean government for extending an invitation to SADC member states to deploy election observers and the manner in which the observer mission had been received in Zimbabwe.

“The Summit encouraged the Government, all political parties and leaders to continue with these commendable efforts which will help realize credible elections,” the communiqué read.

It commended South African President Jacob Zuma, who is the SADC facilitator, for his tireless efforts in ensuring that the Zimbabwe political stakeholders hold successful elections.
