Warriors shift focus to Chan

The Zimbabwe Warriors head off to the African Nations Championships this weekend, hoping to make up for their failure to win the Cosafa Castle Cup last weekend.

Klaus Dieter Pagels’ boys head into the Chan qualifier with confidence, as they have never lost to their opponents, Mauritius, in any international soccer competition.

They need to make a good statement for qualification to the continental showpiece that is of lesser value than the more glamorous African Nations Cup. Already, hosts South Africa, Ghana, Morocco and Libya have qualified for the finals, to be held in January-February next year.

Zimbabwe cannot afford to miss out of this one again, after they were forced to watch the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2013 Afcon from the sidelines.

The Warriors have made the trip to the Chan since it was launched in 2009, although, like in the Afcon, they have so far failed to progress beyond the first round. Should they progress over Mauritius, they will play the winner of the match between Zambia and Botswana to qualify for the finals.
