Doctor in fraud storm

A 32-year-old medical doctor, who allegedly defrauded investors of cash amounting to $40,000, has been arrested.

Ziwai Maneswa is understood to have fled the country when the police launched a manhunt for him in March 2012. His recent arrest in Gweru was as a result of a tip off to police by some of his victims.

Prosecutor Andrew Marimo told the court that from January 31, 2011 to March 6, 2012, Maneswa was director of a local microfinance firm, Daizilin Private Limited. His plan was to defraud investors in order to re-capitalise his business.

Maneswa advertised in the local media that his company was registered to operate banking and finance services. This prompted hordes of people to respond to the adverts and deposit cash in his office in Gweru. He then told clients that he would pay interest on their deposits of between 10 and 65 percent.

In a bid to falsely prove to the investors that his activities were above board, he would complete acknowledgement of debt forms in the name of the Daizilin company confirming the deposits and the supposed interest rates.

The court further heard that Maneswa took the cash he received for personal use before fleeing the country. The total amount he stole was $40,200.

Magistrate Siphatekile Msipa remanded Maneswa’s trial until August 7. He is currently on bail.

Sources said Maneswa is also under fire from owners of MIPF building in Gweru where his offices were situated due to non-payment of rent amounting to $13,000. It is understood the owners of the building are planning to attach property owned by Maneswa in order to recover the debt.
