Mugabe begs for Manicaland vote

Zanu (PF) leader, Robert Mugabe, has pleaded with people from Manicaland to vote for him and not to repeat what they did during the 2008 harmonised election where MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai outmanouvered him.

Out of the 26 constituency, the MDC-T won 20 while Zanu (PF) had the rest.

Addressing about 15, 000 people who thronged the Mutare Aerodrome today, Mugabe said he was still shocked by the 2008 election results.

“We had no option, but to form the GNU because you voted for the MDC-T. I do not know why you voted for them. You forgot that it is here in Manicaland where a lot of blood was shed. You forgot about the liberation heroes from Manicaland who brought us independence and voted for people who did not go to war,” said Mugabe.

“Why, why, why? What went wrong in 2008? With the liberation war history of Zanu (PF), are you going to vote for the MDC-T again this time? You were sweet talked and promised bread and butter by Tsvangirai.

They persuaded you to change the leadership, so are we going to throw away and change our history as a party?” asked Mugabe.

He described the MDC-T as a party being sponsored by Britain and America, saying such a party had no place in Zimbabwe’s ideologies.

“Yes, as a party we lost to the MDC-T in 2008 because of some errors, but this time we want to reclaim all the lost seats. It is now the time we should do away with the MDC-T because they do not have anything to offer at all. We gave them the chance to prove themselves in the GNU, but what have they done?” said Mugabe.

“They failed to rescue the companies that were closing, they failed to provide the jobs that they have been promising you and they only feed themselves. They have houses in South Africa and they go there to spend money. Is that the leadership that you want,” asked the Zanu (PF) leader.

He attacked the minister of Finance Tendai Biti for holding on to the $500 million special grant from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that was given to Zimbabwe meant for the resuscitation of the economy during the global recession in 2009.

“I have been asking him about that money and he has not given me an answer and I do not know where that money is,” said Mugabe.

Mugabe said his visit to Mutare was meant to remind the people not to lose their identity as Zimbabweans and should vote for him and Zanu (PF) peacefully.
