Komichi launches bid for freedom

The defense team for MDC-T Deputy National Chairman, Morgan Komichi, today launched a bail application at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Komichi’s lawyer, Tarisai Mutangi, told The Zimbabwean that ruling on the application would be made on Tuesday.

He said that his client has been charged with fraud and violating Section 85 (1) (e) of the Electoral Act.

Komichi is currently detained at Chikurubi Remand prison.

He was arrested yesterday for allegedly misrepresenting to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission that he was in possession of an envelope with a special vote ballot which had been picked by an unnamed person at a Harare hotel.

Allegations against Komichi are that he went on to mark the ballot papers in favour of the MDC-T.

Police allege that the ballots were not marked by the voter as they do have the secret mark of the presiding officer of the polling station hence the suspicion that Komichi marked the papers in favour of his party.
