Buses Impounded at Beitbridge

Scores of Zimbabweans coming from South Africa intending to vote in today’s elections are stranded at Beitbridge police station following the impounding of their buses by police yesterday.

Five buses, two marked Xmars Mary buses, one marked Mzansi, one Bravo and another from Nda 1 company were impounded by the ZRP for allegedly carrying illegal immigrants .

“We have been at Beitbridge police station since yesterday afternoon. The police are saying the buses cannot proceed because they are carrying illegal immigrants. They are saying the buses will only proceed on Thursday. We feel this is ploy by police to prevent Zimbabweans based in South Africa from voting,” said Garikai Tholana, who was in one of the buses.

Another passenger in one of the buses described the move by the police as a violation of the constitutional right to vote.

“Even if the buses are released today, it is clear that I will not be able to vote because of the time factor. Apart from that, we hear police roadblocks have been mounted all over the highway just to frustrate people from the diaspora who want to go and vote,” he said. The MDC formations had hired buses to ferry their supporters so that they could vote in today’s plebiscite .
