Army gives orders to govt: Dabengwa

Former ZIPRA intelligence supremo Dumiso Dabengwa says the army is giving orders to the civilian government. Speaking at the recent burial of former ZIPRA High Command member, Retired Col. Richard Dube (whose war name was Gedi Ndlovu) Dabengwa said: “Kanti uMorgan esewinile ama election owathi yena uMugabe engasuki esihlalweni ngubani? Kayisiyo, Zanu (PF), kayisiyo Politburo. Iarmy yathi awuhambi! Lakhathesi kwabanjalo. (When Morgan Tsvangirai won the elections, who ordered Mugabe to stay

“I would have been surprised. This country is now run by the junta. If they declare anything, they get it. Nobody defies them,” lamented Dabengwa, after some mourners blamed the army and the ruling party for failing to declare Dube a hero, or helping with the funeral.

Zanu (PF) Politburo member Sikhanyiso Ndlovu walked out during the body-viewing session, because he felt insulted by Dabengwa and ZAPU Elders Council member, Macelegwane Khabo .

“We have come to bury uGedi. We fought the liberation war together. But don’t use the funeral for politicking,” said Ndlovu, infuriated by Dabengwa and Khabo’s use of an allegory in which Joshua Nkomo’s supporters who remained in the Unity Accord at the end of 2008 are likened to a donkey that is used to being tied to a tree.

ZIPRA Veterans Trust Chairman Baster Magwizi said most veterans were now outside Zanu (PF) “except the opportunistic ones”. “Those who claim that they remain in Zanu (PF) because they are Patriotic Front are doing it in order to line their pockets,” he said.
