What do the people say?

More and more Zimbabweans, both at home and all over the world, are using social media to communicate. The Zimbabwean is committed to helping Zimbabweans everywhere to claim and access their right to give and receive information. So every week we stimulate debate on a number of issues affecting us. These are your responses in this week’s issue:

What do you think needs to be done to improve the harvests of family farmers in Zimbabwe?

Avail credit lines, improve agric ext services & dev market linkages. – @farirai_mageza

Like the yesteryears when the farmers had a fund set aside in cases of relief. That should be the case today farmers need government help always and there is need for education on farming means and methods. – Jacob Chifire

Most family farmers are prevalent in rural areas and they need to be trained on sustainable farming methods. In Masvingo, for example, they were taught a farming program called ‘’dhiga udye,’’ but it didn’t work out and the folks ended up calling it ‘’dhiga ufe.’’ They need training on the right crops to grow, especially the small grains and high maturing crops. They also need to be taught how to optimize post harvest strategies, so that they can preserve their crops and consume it throughout the year, to foster food security. Most of these folks are facing transient poverty, not as a result of low harvest, but because of lack of knowledge on how to preserve food, thus the saying ‘’mapudzi haaiswe mudura.’’ Some of the food that they live to rot can be preserved and consumed throughout the whole year, and reduce pressure on demand for sadza only. Let’s therefore teach the country folks how to preserve makwakwa, ipwa, relish, and other crops. That way, we will reduce hunger, whether transient or chronic. It will also lessen pressure on social safety nets, money which can be challed to productive sectors to create new jobs and money. – Clémence Machadu

Auditing land first, then everything follows. – Godfrey Ngaite Malinga

Do you think the media should investigate allegations of corruption at parastatals?

Would you be prepared to be a whistle-blower about corruption at your workplace?

Do you think vendors should be kept off the streets?

Yes. Order is needed. – @Hyagle

Not in a country with a 90 % unemployment rate. Remeber we r the country that dsnt even have a budget. Local govt whose debts where written off, they can barely manage waste removals. – @RueMuchie

Do you think motorists should have to pay urban tolls?

The best way to get enough funds is him the Minister to leave office. There is too much money paid to the ministers without

anything happening. The government must leave only 20members in Parliament so as to raise enough funds. – Godfrey Ngaite Malinga

If the govt makes good use of the funds collected at the highway tollgates, I don’t see anyone complaining. Look at the current situation where the Harare-Beitbridge highway is the cash cow of toll funds but it has now been reduced to a village path. So who will be convinced to support the concept of urban tolls? – Lloyd Choto

I have to laugh when people say that they shouldn’t have to pay something, but that the government should fund it. Pray tell where does the government get their money? So the question to bear is really this. Do you want the government to charge you for it? Or do you want to pay the cost penny by penny yourselves? – Avanza Vaile

Mpofu shld just try and give zimbabwe a third only a third of the cash he looted when he was the mines minister. That third i tell yu can be the panacea to the challenges bedevelling zimbabwe. – Tsakka Ray

They are running out of ideas kani. Nothing good can come out of them anymore. – Oliver Madyiwa

That’s madness, we will never pay tolls if we are still driving in pothole infested roads. Upgrade them then we will talk from there. – Blessing Makweche

S.A has the best roads in africa because of urban tolling. – Busi Sibanda

S.A has the best roads not because of urban tolling but sound & transparent management systems. – Ernest Magwaza

Urban roads are supposed to be paid for out of rates. Plus there’s a levy built into the cost per litre of fuel which is meant for roads. So if tolls are brought in will the rates be reduced and the levy removed from the cost of fuel? Thought not. – Sally Westwood

Humutakudza mutoro wake. – Mathew Tumbare

Zanu pf ministers are now showing lack of innovation in the management of the Zim economic meltdown. Mpofu’s proposal on the introduction of urban toll gates is just outrageous. He must step down and let the capable run his ministry. – Gain Sibanda

The economy can never be rigged. – Aaron Gudo

No. Government should fund. – Benson Brown

Do you think the Look East policy has benefitted the country? If so, how?

What #LookEast Policy? #JonathanMoyo summed it up way back: it’s a #ZanuPF #Slogan NOT #Policy. – @TichRay

Zanu will look at anyone that gives them politically unconditional money. Screw the resources #corrupt. – @deLappe

Uuuh!!! I do not think so, I think Zim as actually become a dumping sight by the Chinese. – @allantap

If everyone is noticing a thing it usually isn’t just some misunderstanding of culture or ways. It really is that they are disrespecting your environment, your laws, and your people, and the protected species in your protected parks. Stop asking if what you’re seeing is true. You already know it is. – Avanza Vaile

It has exploited the nation’s resources without consolidating an improved standard of living for the community thru social responsibility.I think if china is looking west for economical emancipation,we also must have the guts to look west as well. – Stephen Zimuto Chinhuwo

If they were gud investors companies were nt going to close. – Ephraim Sithole

Do you think the prosperity gospel is un-Biblical or “satanic”?

We need to discern more. – Gilbert Munemo

Lord , deliver us from evil , both satanic acts and the love of money using your name. – Marjorie Kashiri

The prosperity gospel is not satanic because GOD promised blessings to HiS WORSHIPPERS in deutronomy 28 and many other beatitudes.Following after blessings is uncalled for by the scriptures, but blessings should follow your good character. – Stephen Zimuto Chinhuwo

There is a time and place for everything I guess. There is place for the the prosperity gospel I think but then it shouldn’t be the only thing going on. There is a whole plethora of issues to preach about and teach on. – Kosi Marimo

Its not about what one thinks its about what the Word of God says. The only Biblical Gospel is Christ’s birth, birth and ressurrection chete and HIS 2nd coming. Yes!! We’re active & we still want to see ourselves making a difference in our respective communities & the country as a whole. We dont need experience but what we need & want,we stand for it. – Mehleli Ndlovu

If it is for the right causes/Reasons! – Tanyaradzwa Rodgers Ngara

It sure will if you encourage and show them what to be active for! Action is the only way things get done. – Avanza Vaile

For what precisely? against who? – Agatha Chiseya

Yes there is an urgent need but the sucess might be precipitated by lack of interest of the govt coz there is no bill which fully supports that without “police clearance”. – Irvine Mupfuri

How would you advise Daddy’s girl?

Disengagement of youth in agric & outdated education system. – @farirai_mageza

A lack of government investment, untrained and novice farmers and state patriotism in Zim. – @MCFNottingham

Sanctios. Well thyr a number of factors really…but chief of the is the cost of prodxtn and the inability of farmers to access capital. – @zimbo_analyst

Do you think children should be used to generate an income?

This this what I meant when I was talking about changing the labels from blood to clean like it’s just some tag that makes it okay. These companies are employing people and exploiting them and then cutting them all off when they have to close. They (companies) need to be participating in awareness and education. People can’t be forced to starve because some company has acted poorly. Someone has to be willing to step in with a plan and implement it. It is the people who are being forced to suffer while everyone else points fingers. – Avanza Vaile

The situation is really pathetic. – Israel Chikava
