Dozens of Zimbabwean musicians showcase their talents in exile, but rarely do we get to hear the story behind the on-stage presence.

Zimbabwe-born Nothando Ndlovu combines menial jobs in Johannesburg with a blossoming musical career. She never thought of becoming a professional musician, but she did regularly attend church and sing for a small crowd. Today, though, she performs in leading venues in front of hundreds of fans.

Ndlovu, who works as a cleaner in a financial office, said she’d written 12 songs for an album but it was a while before she had the money to record them. She released her debut album Nothando Ndlovu & Bana Bamodimo in 2012 and signed a five-year contract with Kabamba Studios.

The gospel singer believes Zimbabweans have huge talent and can outshine their competitors if they remain focused. She called on musicians in exile to unite and market their music properly, using qualified music managers.

Now, Ndlovu is back in the studio working on her second album, due out in February.
