Dream comes true for disabled schoolgirl

Former Khumalo primary school pupil Precious Ngwenya (13), whose legs were amputated last year following a horrific car accident, has fulfilled her dream by enrolling at King George VI Memorial School in Bulawayo.

Thirteen-year-old Precious Ngwenya now has the education and the special facilities she needs to create a bright future for herself.

The school, the only secondary school in the country that caters for physically disabled students, is also part of the King George VI Centre, which provides boarding and rehabilitation for children from three years old up to the age of 18.

After excelling in her grade seven examinations last year, Precious told The Zimbabwean that her wish was to go to the school. When we caught up with her this week, she was happily busy with her schoolwork.

“I am more comfortable here,” said Precious. “I do not feel lonely because all the students are in a similar situation. The other good thing here is that all the facilities are designed for disabled people like myself which makes life very easy.”

One of the teachers at the school described Precious as a cheerful girl who was committed to her work.

“I have taught Precious for only two weeks but during that short period, she has proved to be serious about her work. I have no doubt that she will excel in her studies,” said the teacher.

Precious was run over by a car last year while coming home from school and her story was first highlighted by The Zimbabwean. The paper, through its #MyZim campaign, threw its weight behind fundraising for her medical bills and food. The Bulawayo community, under the guidance of Shiralee Taylor, set up a fund for her.
