War vets demand more

Meanwhile, war veterans recently approached the parliamentary committee on Defence and Home Affairs with a renewed demand for $18,000 per member and mining claims in the diamond rich Marange fields as a gratuity for participating in the struggle.

In November 1997 some 60,000 war veterans each got Z$50,000 lump sum gratuities, which caused a steep devaluation of Z$14:US$1 to Z$49:US$1. The economy never recovered from this blow.

The ex-combatants now receive a monthly allowance of $280 each – almost the same as the least paid civil servant. They and their families are entitled to free medical aid and school fees are paid by government.

“We are not begging but simply demanding what is due to us given the role we played in liberating the country,” said Shadreck Makombe, the Secretary General of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association in an interview with The Zimbabwean this week.

“There is no doubt that we were strongly behind Zanu (PF) during the 2013 elections and we believe our demands should be expedited accordingly,” said Makombe.
