The Chairman, Naison Mudzara, said more than 2,000 houses built around the Ziko Business Centre following allocation of land to villagers and housing cooperatives outside MRDC laws would be turned into an urban set-up.
To normalise the situation and defuse hostilities between the local authority and the settlers, MRDC is charging affected households a $1,000 penalty each. Additional payments would be made for the regularisation and allocation fees.
Though the local community preferred the area to remain rural, Mudzara said, the only way forward would be to urbanise it. Only structures built before the audit will be regularised, those constructed later face demolition.
