CZI vice-president Henry Nemaire last week pressed for the immediate construction of a modern airport in the province.
The city currently has an aerodrome that has been neglected for many years. Some politicians and lobby groups feel that Mutare has not had the same attention as other major cities, such as Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru and Masvingo, which have functioning airports.
The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce president, Hlanganiso Matangaidze, has also made similar calls. Said Nemaire: “Modern tourists want to fly to a resort. They don’t want to land in Harare and then have to drive to Mutare and face the constant hassle of police roadblocks along the way.”
Nemaire said Mutare could not be classified as a modern city when it didn’t have an airport to boost investment opportunities, increase tourism and employment and improve the infrastructure. “We are the third largest city in the country, but we don’t have an airport,” he said.
Nemaire said government should lay out a framework for building an airport as part of its Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation document (Zim-Asset).
