Addressing (ZACRAS) board and secretariat members in Harare early this month, the minster of Media, Information and Publicity, Professor Jonathan Moyo said government is seriously considering issuing licences to community radio stations but he however insisted that the
licences will only be granted to geographical communities that exist under the jurisdiction of chiefs with shared history, norms and values.
“No one is confused about what radio is but there is a lot of confusion about what community is, said Moyo at the meeting held at his Munhumutapa offices.
ZACRAS, an umbrella body representing the country’s aspiring community broadcasters will on Monday hold a traditional leadership conference in Bulawayo on community radio stations.
“We are expecting that this conference will be attended by village heads, headmen, women and chiefs. The aim of this conference is to deliberate with traditional leaders so that there is a clear appreciation of this sub-sector by our communities. The traditional leadership is our legitimate custodians of our culture and communities “said Kudzai Kwangwari, ZACRAS programmes officer.
Kwangwari said several traditional headmen and chiefs including Fortune Charumbira, the president of Chief’s Council are expected to attend the one day community radio indaba.
