In a statement issued by the MDC shadow minister for Home Affairs, Lillian Timveous, the arrest of MDC supporters while leaving those who initiated the violence from Zanu (PF) confirmed that the ZRP was partisan and selective in the application of the law.
Timveous said: “The MDC is appalled and outraged by continued police harassment, abuse and violence against its supporters.
“Eight innocent MDC supporters have since been arrested although we were victims and not the perpetrators of violence in Epworth. But true to tradition, the police arrested the victims and not the actual perpetrators of the violence who are Zanu (PF).”
Timveous said her party would not be intimidated by the selective application of the law and by the violence from Zanu (PF) thugs. She said: “The MDC condemns this selective, if not blind application of the law.
“Zanu (PF) thugs had no right to attack MDC members. It is their members who should have been arrested for provoking and assaulting people and causing public violence in Epworth.”
Timveous said the country was slowly regressing back to the 2008 era and called on the party supporters to continue fighting for democracy.
She said: “Zanu (PF)’s diversions should never be accepted. Our party remains strong and committed to fighting for real change and we shall not cow to any violence and attempts at intimidating the people.”
Following the violent clashes last Sunday, Tambudzai Kalandi and Florence Motsi are detained at the Avenues Clinic in Harare.
Kalandi is in the intensive care unit, having suffered multiple body injuries including a broken leg, while Motsi sustained severe head injuries.
