PSL Round-up

Caps United coach Taurai Mangwiro says his side’s 1-0 triumph over Dynamos in the Army Charity Shield semi-final at the weekend has raised their morale.

Makepekepe are one of the sides fighting to win their first league championship after some years of trying. The Harare giants last won it way back in 2005. Since then, their best was a third-place finish in 2009. However, Mangwiro had high hopes of another happy ending this season, following their ability to break DeMbare’s dominance over the Green Machine. Caps’ win was their first over Dynamos in five years.

“We now have the hope. The match against Dynamos has shown us that we can clinch the championship because we beat the reigning champions,” said Mangwiro. “Our camp is full of hope and the coming game against How Mine will be another opportunity for us to march on. We want to be at the top when the season ends.”

The club also seems to have overcome the financial blues that had troubled them for some time, as club president Twine Phiri ensures stability. Phiri, who is also the PSL chairman, has secured some sponsorship for the club, which only last season had to offload some senior players whose contracts “ate too much” from their coffers.

Tawanda Nyamandwe, Tawanda Munyanduri, David Rediyoni, Clive Kawinga and Washington Pakamisa are some of the talented senior players who abandoned the Makepekepe camp last season.

Highly-rated Ishmael Tindwa, defensive linkman Madaliso Mwanza and speedy striker Gerald Phiri have so far done justice for Makepekepe and can bring back glory days of Ian Bakala, Joseph Kamwendo, Hadj Tambala and others.

Highlanders, straight from a shock 2-1 defeat by FC Platinum in the Army Charity Shiled semi-final, clash with struggling Harare City, while Black Rhinos meet ZPC Kariba at Rimuka Stadium. Bantu Rovers and Chicken Inn clash in a Bulawayo derby.

There were no PSL games last weekend, so there will be no PSL log
