Mvuma truck driver assembles sungura outfit

A local haulage truck driver has risen from obscurity to assemble a sungura music band that has livened up the entertainment-starved district.

Andrew “Jangwa” Jangara’s Mvuma Sounds formerly known as Njeremoto, is made up of eight members. It has so far recorded its debut album titled Musha Waparara which include songs that have found places in hearts of many like Tarisiro and Hanzvadzi yangu. The songs reflect the lifestyles of the villagers in Mvuma which is a chrome mining area and reiterates that people should not despair due to the economic hardships but look to future moments where lives will be full of hope.

The outfit has so far shared the stage during live shows with popular musicians such as the Masimba hitmaker Somandla Ndebele, Daiton Somanje, Nicholas “Senior Lecturer” Madzibaba, Gift Amuli and Progress Chipfumo. The shows were held at popular spots in Mvuma and surrounding areas such as Chirumanzu and Chivhu.

In an interview on the side-lines of the band’s live show in Mvuma recently, Jangara, 39, said his band was looking into a future where it will become one of the country’s most popular sungura outfits.

“It has not been easy to reach where we are now. We mooted the idea of forming a band way back in 1998. However, it has been difficult to find our feet and be recognised by fans because usually they just want to stick to popular names such as Alick Macheso, Madzibaba and others,” said the musician who drives haulage truck transporting various good to DRC, South Africa, Zambia and Angola.

He said he was inspired to enter into the music industry by the late Leonard Dembo, who at the time of his death was the best thing that had happened to Sungura music.

“I find it crucial to convey important messages to society through music. That is what drives us. Everyone in the industry is being affected by piracy but we are determined to soldier on and our fans will witness great things that are coming,” said Jangara.
