Mighty Warriors face daunting task

The Mighty Warriors will have a daunting task on their hands when they travel to Zambia this weekend for the second leg of their final round qualifier for the 2014 Africa Women’s Championships.

Their game, coming hard on the heels of the elimination of their male counterparts from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, could not have come at a worse time, as victory is desperately needed to keep Zimbabwean football alive on the international front.

With The Warriors out of competition, and the Zimbabwean youth teams having been withdrawn from Pan African football, the Mighty Warriors remain the only hope in international football.

Just like the Warriors, who went into their game against Tanzania trailing 1-0 from the first leg, the women’s soccer team is also one goal behind, having lost their home encounter at Rufaro Stadium two weeks ago.

Coach Rosemary Mugadza is back with the team, after she missed the loss to the Chipolopolo Queens due to a family bereavement. Captain Patience Muzongoni said they were ready for the Zambians and all the players were focused on the game. “We made many mistakes in the first leg and we are eager to correct those, win the tie and qualify for the finals,” she said.

The Mighty Warriors, who knocked out Botswana in the first round, are desperate to qualify for the Africa Women’s Championships, where the top three teams from the competition will qualify to represent the continent at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

The last time the Mighty Warriors participated at the Africa Women’s Championships was way back in 2014 when Mugadza was captain of the team.
