SA still to decide on Zim migrants

The South African government is yet to make a decision on the renewal of permits given to Zimbabwean migrants four years ago.

More than 270,000 beneficiaries of the Zimbabwe Documentation Project are waiting on tenterhooks to see what will happen as the work, business and study permits expire this month.

Although Fatima Chohan, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, stated earlier in the year that the permit holders would be required to renew in their home countries, there has still been no fulfilment of her promise that a full statement would be issued.

A source within DHA said consultations were still going on. “I know that many people draw worry from the newly-gazetted migration laws, but there were migration laws when the DZP was drawn up and that is why it was called the special dispensation. It came out of a political decision and still remains a special dispensation that has nothing to do with migration laws,” he said.

New Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba, said: “We are in the process of discussions; in that regard your friends will have to bear with me … a lot of work needs to go into that thinking and a lot of thinking needs to go into that work.”
