The Bloomberg News reported on Thursday that IMF had appointed Christian Beddies to head its Harare office, quoting unnamed sources.
The publication said IMF was “finalising the process for appointing a resident representative in Harare” and would deploy the key official in July.
The financial institution withdrew from Zimbabwe in 2004 due to ballooning arrears that started accumulating in 1999.
The Zimbabwean government has been promising to resume repaying the IMF, but nothing tangible has come out of it.
An IMF Staff Monitored Programme (SMP) meant to establish the modalities of repayment and possible re-admission of Zimbabwe to the international lender has been set up, and the reported dispatch of a representative is likely to be a result of the initiative.
Zimbabwe, however, last year failed to meet two deadlines to draw up a plan of re-engagement with the IMF in accordance with expectations of the SMP.
