Mugabe, Moyo smoke peace pipe

At a gathering of mourners who congregated to grieve the late Nathan Shamuyarira, President Mugabe branded his propaganda minister Jonathan Moyo a weevil and devil incarnate. Didymus Mutasa, head of the diesel-in-a-rock delegation, weighed in with calls for the extermination – figurative or actual, who knows – of Moyo the weevil.

But despite Mutasa’s attempts to pour diesel onto the fire, Mugabe and his propaganda minister lit a match and smoked a peace pipe. It is believed that during this pipe smoking ceremony, Mugabe forbade his spin doctor from maligning other party members, at least until 2018 – at which point, the mudslinging of elections will begin.

Other than the bayonet of the military and the strong arm of the law, Robert Mugabe has long employed mind games to prolong his stay in power. His decision to leave Moyo unpunished may not necessarily be sign of leniency but an elaborate ploy to keep the different factions at each other’s throats while he maintains a grip on power – the old but effective divide and rule tactic. In the game of politics, check does not necessarily mean mate.
