It would have been business as usual if Zanu (PF) could rig real economic recovery – which includes addressing the causes of the economic meltdown like corruption, which Mugabe has ignored over the years.
It would not be business as usual if he did. Mugabe had a plan for rigging economic recovery, the $27 billion ZimAsset. Sadly for him the West was not fooled and so they refused to contribute a penny. Not even the Chinese would contribute.
After a year of staring at the empty ZimAsset begging bowl and a fast collapsing economy, the regime does not have enough money to pay civil servants let alone anything else. It seems the president has at last come to his senses. He has admitted he cannot rig economic recovery and accepts there is need to talk.
Tsvangirai’s reaction to this was ecstatic. “I notice the emerging consensus on my call for dialogue. The same call has been made by international institutions, Cabinet ministers, economists and civic society,” he said. He is very excitable and gets easily carried away!
If it was left to Zanu (PF) alone they would have Tsvangirai and some of those wishy-washy civic groups to the talks precisely because Mugabe knows he will run rings round the idiots just as he has done in the past! But Mugabe must know that adding a totally discredited Tsvangirai to his equally discredited regime will not fool SADC – much less those with the money to finance the economic recovery!
If Mugabe thinks bringing Tsvangirai through the back door to spruce up his Zanu (PF) image will fool anyone then he has a lot to learn. Not even SADC much less the more savvy international community with the money will be fooled.
The only meeting worth attending is one that will deliver free, fair and credible elections at the end of the day. It is really naive for anyone to think that Mugabe and Zanu (PF) can be trust to host such a meeting!
Mugabe has a simple choice – either hold serious talks with serious participants and move the country forward or hold meaningless talks with discredited individuals like Tsvangirai and stare at the mocking ZimAsset begging bowl for a bit longer.
Whatever he decides he will have to hold serious talks sooner or later, there is no way out! – Wilbert Mukori, by email

In describing the type of William Mukori in shona there is a saying that goes; vana ndipe ndiridze. The english translation is a johnie come lately. He has no vision on issues and has no context as well. The international community will not drop a cent into Zimbabwe because the types of William Mukori have been included in any talks about Zimbabwe’s future. Instead the international community want a return of national confidence in the government before they can engage. Without that national confidence NO twenty Mukoris can move the international community to move any inch in engaging Zimbabwe. For your benefit Mr Mukori the stock markets swing up or down in accordance with how they rate national confidence enjoyed by those in office. So Mr Mukori watoti kora ne ignorance yako.
In 2008 the economy collapsed on the back of loss of national confidence. The rural people spontaneously rejected the Zimbabwe dollar. The urban people withdraw their confidence in the Reserve Bank and all hell broke loose. In no time we were in hyperinflation of unprecedented levels. In 2009 came Morgan Tsvangirai that national confidence returned. Of course there was doubt from the international community but the economy stabilized in less than two months. The Zimbabwe economy was working again. For the entire four years of the GNU the economy remained stable even as Morgan’s gaffes in his personal life were made public. I want to venture here that not a single cent took flight owing to Morgan’s presence in government. Instead the moment Morgan left the government there was a sudden run on the banks with long queues of people who wanted to withdraw their money. That was followed closely by a flight of capital as investors took their money elsewhere. What followed is in the public domain but one thing was certain that the economy was heading into the ground once again.
So the international community was inconsequential to this issue. Indeed the EU removed their sanctions but that could not stop the downward slide.
Maybe this is too complicated for William Mukori to understand. Let me simplify it by saying the prerequisite for the international community to engage with Zimbabwe is that there must exist national confidence first. Without national confidence then nobody will invest in Zimbabwe. The only person that can give the national confidence is Morgan Tsvangirai and not a snivelling Mukori.
VaMukori please, koriwai zvakanaka. Hapana apa chamuno gona kuridza. Hapana apa nganunu (cannon) yenyu. This not your type of gun to fire. So do us a favor and just zip your mouth shut.
@GM
I failed to see what you are trying to say here.
“The international community will not drop a cent into Zimbabwe because the types of William Mukori have been included in any talks about Zimbabwe’s future. Instead the international community want a return of national confidence in the government before they can engage. Without that national confidence NO twenty Mukoris can move the international community to move any inch in engaging Zimbabwe,†you said.
In the first sentence: 1) there have not been any talks so I have been included in talks that are not there and 2) the international community have not contributed a penny into the ZimAsset begging bowl for other reasons and not because of imaginary participants in imaginary talks.
In the second sentence: if there is one thing Mugabe has never lacked it is self-confidence and so if it was just “a return of national confidence†then after the rigged elections Mugabe and Zanu PF were agog with self-confidence. It was the international community that did not have confidence in the regime to end corruption and to respect the rule of law. After you have just rigged an election, it was of course impossible to hold yourself as a paragon of rule of law.
In the third sentence: well there is so much confusion here one does not even know where to start to try and unravel it. Can you please explain what will restore this mythical “national confidenceâ€; forget about the 20 Mukoris, they have played no part in this.
