Chiredzi council tackles corruption, nepotism

Massive corruption and nepotism have been unearthed at the Chiredzi Town Council, prompting it to reverse the allocation of about 700 stands.

Sources said that among those allocated some of the stands were three year-old children. It also emerged that some of those who benefited from the housing scam were from the same family sharing the same surname.

A list of beneficiaries that had been displayed by the local authority had to be pulled down after an outcry from residents over the manner in which the stands were allocated.

“We have withdrawn the entire list because it was riddled with corruption,” said council chairman Francis Moyo. “Some of the corruption emanated from the previous council where stands were allocated to relatives and friends.”

He said the list that was published was totally different from what some of the councillors had in their records and accused his predecessor Michael Nyashero of having corruptly benefited from the housing scam through some of his companies.

Nyashero denied any wrong doing. “I never benefited anything from this corruption but instead it is the current council which is corrupt. Look, they have now reversed the allocation of stands due to corruption,” he said.

Chiredzi town has a house waiting list of about 7,000 people.
